On June 6, 1944, thousands of Allied ships crossed the English Channel in the largest amphibious invasion in history. Under relentless enemy fire, they bombarded the Normandy coast, shattered German defenses, and delivered more than 150,000 troops into the fight to liberate Europe. By dawn, over 5,000 ships and landing craft hit 5 beaches: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, Sword. The cost was brutal - especially at Omaha Beach - but the gamble worked.
